Caught on camera: half moon and Green Planet/Object over Pörtschach

Saturday, august.9 as i was sitting inside my room working on my photographs on my laptop late last night, i saw this moon and the beautiful colorful clouds over lake Pörtschach.

our room is on the 2nd floor and we have a wide window. seeing the moon and the colored sky encouraged me to photograph it.

can you spot the green object near the moon?

i have no idea what was going on around this half moon and i could not see this green object from my naked eyes until i have downloaded my photographs and i saw this green object!

could it be another planet circling the moon at the right time i was photographing it?? or could it be an Unidentified Flying Object, LOL? either one, then i have made history for myself, LOL..!!!

at first, i thought it could be a reflection or dirt on my lens but seeing each 3 shots of photograph and it is GREEN and somewhat rounded made me realized there is something going on around the moon as this green object was not standing still.

Photograph 2 and 3 obviously shows like there is another planet moving around the moon or around my earth, but which planet could that be and what is it? any idea someone? i am very, very curious now...

Weather is so perfect out here, sunny but cool breeze, couldn't ask for more. i never attend open mass like this and by the lake furthermore. unfortunately, i cannot share my photo taken just now bcos i took it on my cellphone and it didnt bring my USB connection. i thought i wud be rude to use my other digitnal camera during mass but i am wrong. lots of people took photographs. oh well, i cannot ask for everything, right. How was your holiday btw?

i still saw my green 'planet' again late last night and it seemed to 'orbit' around the half moon!! i'll share some photos later today or when i can. i am getting flat curious what that green thing was and have failed miserably to find about it over the web as well :((

Crystal Clear said...

Nina, the 'green' object only shows during the nite? Not a sattelite or something like that??

from Canon350D to NikonD700 and Fujifilm FX10 said...

from each shot of my photographs it moved or orbit, Joann and i wonder if you cud also try to photograph this moon from your end and hopefully your camera will capture this green object. Yes, it seemed to show at night when it is dark. i am going to try to photograph this moon again tonight after dinner.

I too have the photo, last night from a deck in RI.. what is it?

HI I found this online..
Planet Uranus is on the very edge of naked-eye visibility, reflecting enough sunlight even from its distant position to come in at magnitude 5.9. Sharp-eyed skywatchers who are familiar with the heavens and have very dark skies can find the planet with no optical aids. Under city or suburban lighting conditions, however, binoculars are needed.

A good-sized backyard telescope -- roughly 3 inches or bigger -- should resolve the pale green planet into a tiny disk, though no features will be visible. Uranus is about 30 degrees to the left of Mars or, measuring with the width of a fist on an outstretched arm, about three fists.

Crystal Clear said...

hey Joel, that's a totally perfect explanation about the green round object circling round the moon, so it's Uranus.....anyhow will still look into it tonight...thanx for checking it out :))

hi Joel, thanks for dropping by and thank you for searching and giving your comments. i read online people who photographed moon in august will see this green object after they have downloaded their photographs. they too, asked the same question wanting to know what it was. my intention was the moon until i saw that green object. last night i photographed them again and it seemed to orbit around the moon. i will put up these photos as soon as i can. i photographed them here at Pörtschach, Austria and i am still searching what that green orb really is. Planet Uranus? my father-in-law assumed it may be sun. Planet SUN?? :))))

hey Joann. you have homework to do at your end tonight, try to photograph your moon and see if we see the same thing :)))

Nina, I'll try my luck tonight with the photo shooting, wanted to do last nite but the whole nite the sky was so cloudy, no sight of mr. moon at all and then it is pitch black....see if my cheap digicam can capture the moon and clear as yours :))

hi Joann, i saw bright moon up here in Germany's sky and outside its circle it looks so glowing, macam vapor-like lah and FIL said it maybe a sign of going to rain. Lets see if he is correct tomoro to know :))) so, did you manage to photograph your moon? i am getting skeptical about the green object, i cudn't find what it was. Some new photographs to follow soon :))

hi Joyce, many thank you for visiting and your support compliments (kembang hidung sia sudah hehee)

Nina, yes I managed to take a few photos of the moon Tuesday evening and that was already 10pm but the sky was still a bit bluish then, I thought I would take some more after my shower, when I came back out, the moon has gone into hiding and suddenly it started to rain :(((....and last nite, at 11:30pm I saw the moon again, so I quickly took another snap of it, will upload it the soonest and we can compare notes, hehehehhehe.....

By the way, how are you my dear? Housing thingy settle? Ready to move into your new place on Monday?? Nah, you take care ok :))

Crystal Clear said...

Aiya Nina, cannotlah, my cheap camera cannot zoom so far as yours, my moon is so small, so funnylah....shame to show you...LOL...bikin malu saja..

Bright and shine out here! my FIL is wrong with his weather prediction about the moon we saw last night, haha... but thanks to him for 'playing guessing', LOL.

Ohhh... Joann, dont say cheap camera lor... i saw you took many nice photographs with your camera, it is just you can't zoom further, but worth the try kan hehee.. Thanks for trying, Joann, really appreciate your effort until 11:30pm...

This is the reflection of the bright moon light going through the lens, bouncing off the film or sensor, and striking back against the inside of the lens, and becoming part of the photo. - take it from a pro.

Take the UV filter off the front of your lens.

from Canon350D to NikonD700 and Fujifilm FX10 said...

Dear Gary and Phule,

Thank you! thank you! so much for enlighten me and other bloggers who will read your comments that the green object was indeed, a reflection. i have thought so after photographing it 3 nights in a row that it could be some kind of reflection. I have blog it again here: http://ninaoa-digitalphotography.blogspot.com/2008/08/enigma-of-green-planet.html (with my comment suggesting it might be a reflection, in the bottom last comment box)

Phule, yes - i have my UV filter on, you figure it out so right. I'm amazed you could 'see' my camera :))

Thank you again to both of you for solving this mystery i have long expected to know. Case happily closed.
